For this exhibition piece, I wanted to create a piece of work which was relevant to both the context of the exhibition space and also the purpose of the exhibition. As the brief was relatively free, we were given the freedom to create a piece of work to gain more public exposure and showcase our skills as a variety of different artists.
As the exhibition was being held at A Nation of Shopkeepers - a trendy bar in Leeds city centre, I had originally thought about creating interactive beer mats. The idea was to place these onto the bar and tables for people to pick up, look at, and take away with them if they wished to.
After speaking to a few people about my concept, I was confident to go ahead with designing beer coasters. I decided to move away from the musical riddle ideas and experiment with lyrics and music which interested me instead.
As I was already focusing my dissertation on hip hop, it made sense to direct my research in the same direction for this project. This was again relevant to the exhibition as two of the live bands performing on the night fall into the hip hop genre.
During my COP research, I discovered that this year (2014) marked the forty year anniversary of hip hop. With this in mind, I began thinking about a project which could somehow celebrate this. With the two key concept now being beer coasters and forty years of hip hop, I began thinking about how I could communicate the two ideas as a whole.
Most of my initial experiments were created in Illustrator.
As a standard beer mat/coaster size is only 89mm x 89mm, I was going to be restricted to a very small amount of information or detail. There was also the possibility of my work being lost, dropped on the floor or going unnoticed. For this reason, I thought it would be beneficial to design a poster with a corresponding design concept. Some of the initial poster and coaster designs are shown below:
