I used the pen tool in Illustrator to trace the scanned drawings into a new layer. This would make it easier to experiment with the different logo variations on a range of sizes.
In order to do this effectively, I lowered the opacity of the original image to 75%.
I then placed the vector versions of the logos into a new Illustrator document. I kept them all small to begin with, in a contact sheet/thumbnail format. The main reason for doing this was to compare the logos against one another. In preparation for the group crit, I wanted to present my original logos to get anonymous feedback on which worked effectively and which logos did not.
The logo variation shown below was originally one of my favourites when I had sketched it. I liked how it incorporated the double 'm' or 'music' and 'motors' combined. However, after experimenting with it in Illustrator, it started looking more and more like the McDonalds 'M' symbol. I also wasn't keen on the lower-case 'm' as I thought it looked a bit childish and therefore less professional.
Following on from this, I decided to focus more on the logo shown below. This also incorporated the double M concept, but this time the overall logo shape was more similar to a capitalised M.
